NUFC release takeover statement – “Never say never, Mike Ashley is 100% committed to this deal”

By | 31st July 2020

Newcastle United have spoken out on about a potential takeover this morning for the first time since the Saudi consortium agreed a deal with Mike Ashley back in April.

The statement, released to Sky Sports by MD Lee Charnley, insists Mike Ashley is still “100% committed” to selling to the Saudis, and states “never say never” – an intriguing yet bizarre hint to make just 24 hours on from their ‘withdrawal’.

To finish, Charnley then insists that the club must focus on backing Steve Bruce in the transfer market for now, with the new season just six weeks away:

“We acknowledge yesterday’s statement.

“Never say never, but to be clear Mike Ashley is 100% committed to this deal (sale).

“However our current focus must now be on supporting Steve Bruce in the transfer market and on the preparations for the new season.”

A hint that this isn’t over just yet? And an acceptance that Mike Ashley really is determined to sell up this time?

It may be a glimmer of hope, however it’s pretty damning that we are now in a vital stage of our preparations for 2020/21, yet have an owner who wants out, buyers who’ve just ‘ withdrawn’ their bid and a club that badly needs investment that Ashley won’t be willing to offer.
