Maurício Pochettino has left the door open for a dramatic switch to Newcastle United this summer – confirming he would ‘consider’ a club outside the Premier League’s ‘big six’.

The Argentine is a popular choice among supporters to become manager should the Saudi-backed takeover be completed.

Now Pochettino, who has been out of work since his sacking by Spurs last November, has revealed he would be open to joining a club outside the traditional top six – a promising sign for potential new owners given his ‘preference’ is said to be another job in England.

When asked if he’d consider a club outside Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal or Chelsea, here’s what he told Sky Sports:

“Yes, I would (consider anything).

“The problem is which club are top six? It always changes.

“Today Tottenham and Arsenal are not in the top six. You need to respect all the clubs.

“They are all working so hard, investing and spending money. They all assign a new strategy each season to reach the top four, top six or top eight.

“You cannot underestimate any person, any institute or any club.

“That is why the Premier League is one of the toughest – all the clubs have the capacity to find a way to be competitive.”

While Pochettino also claimed that he likes living in London, these comments could also be thinly-veiled hints of his affection for the Toon job.

He also speaks of a project, something that a mega-rich Newcastle United would certainly present, with funds at his disposal to totally transform our standing as a club.

Nobody could argue that Poch would build our club from scratch, just as he done at Southampton and Spurs. With the defensive spine of the team already implemented by Rafa Benitez before him, he could turn us into a very decent side with just a few offensive additions in my opinion.
