Alan Shearer doesn’t get to do it very often…
The NUFC legend working on Match of The Day and having the chance to talk about a Newcastle win AND very good performance.
On Saturday night he could do both.
During the actual match on Saturday, Gary Lineker said Alan Shearer had been ‘very excited in the office all afternoon, I had to have ear plugs in at one point.’
The former number nine watching on as Newcastle United went three up inside 51 minutes.
Before the game, the NUFC front three had managed one goal in a combined 26 Premier League appearances this season.
By the final whistle, that total had become one goal in 29 combined PL appearances.
However, Alan Shearer was far happier by then with what he had seen from the attacking trio, with far better movement, hold up play and getting into shooting positions.
Almiron and Saint-Maximin should have got on the scoresheet and that is the next challenge, although Joelinton did notch the trio’s first assist of the season when setting up Clark for the opening goal.
Hopefully the first real signs of far better to come from Almiron, ASM and Joelinton…
Alan Shearer speaking on Match of The Day:
“Steve (Bruce) enjoyed it and so did you Alan, very excited in the office all afternoon, I had to have ear plugs in at one point.
“It was the front three that thrilled you the most?”
“The concern for Newcastle this season has been a lack of creativity and a lack of link up play between those three at times, Saint-Maximin, Almiron and Joelinton, but not today.
“I thought they got the balance in terms of attacking play absolutely perfect.
“Joelinton hold up play was much better and when he got the ball.
“Look at Almiron pointing where he wants it behind Cresswell, he gets it and then nocks it past the defender. Gets the free-kick and they score from that.
“Saint-Maximin, who I thought ran them ragged all afternoon. Same thing again, (ASM) flicks it over, Almiron pointing where he wants it again, they get the corner and also score from that one as well.
“The pace is staggering from Saint-Maximin.
“Ball in behind, counter-attack is superb and if we’re being critical he (ASM) has to scorem brilliant to get there but that should be in the back of the net, that would have been game over.
“Almiron and Saint-Maximin again…
“Poor Pablo (Zabaleta as he tries to catch ASM)!”
…can’t get near him, should put it in the back of the net, first time and the second time, then he sets up Almiron , he can’t put it into the back of the net but they are getting into those positions.
“Pleased for Joelinton, put in a good performance.
“West Ham could not cope with them, it should have been out of sight at half-time, they should have had five or six goals.”
