When Newcastle United signed Fabian Schär from Deportivo La Coruna last summer, little did they know that he would prove himself to be one of the best central defenders in the Premier League.
The Swiss international has already established himself as a firm fan favourite on Tyneside. Despite Newcastle’s struggles this season, Schär has been one of the stand out performers for the Magpies. He is a real ball playing centre half, his stellar performances certainly push Jamaal Lascelles to keep improving. The former Basel player has left Newcastle fans in awe since he joined the club.
Against Manchester United, Schär proved once again just how vital he is to this Newcastle side. The defenders goal saving touch prevented Marcus Rashford from tapping in from close range. It is not only Schär’s defensive prowess that makes him stand out from the crowd, his ability to bring the ball out from the back is a real god send for Newcastle.
Schär’s passing ability is superb for a centre half, the variety of passes he is able to complete is very impressive. His ability to attack came to the fore when Newcastle played Cardiff City at home last season. Schär’s mazy run ended with a fine finish to open the scoring in what was a vital game. The Swiss international would go on to score a second that day as St James’ Park erupted with “Schär will tear you apart again”.
Newcastle have notoriously been weak defensively, however, with Schär, Lascelles, Florian Lejuene and Federico Fernandez there is certainly fierce competition for places in the heart of the defence.
In a recent interview with Football Daily Schär expressed his love for the club. “Now I can say it was the best decision I ever made to come to the Premier League, the best league in the world, and this club where I am extremely happy. I am really happy to be here still.”
Schär is one of the first names on the Newcastle team sheet, he has proved just how good he is since joining. There were a few eyebrows raised when the Magpies signed the Swiss international, with some questioning his ability after being relegated with Deportivo La Coruna. Schär has certainly silenced any critics that he previously had, his stock is well and truly on the rise.
He won February’s ‘Goal of the Month’ award last season for a rocket of a shot against Burnley. He has scored five goals in 32 appearances for the club – being such a threat not only from set pieces but from open play, Schär will be confident in adding to his account.
Schär quickly won the faith of Steve Bruce with his performances. There is no doubting that the former Deportivo man is just as vital to Newcastle as a Miguel Almiron or Allan Saint-Maximin. Schär is certainly one of the shining lights in Bruce’s side, the worrying thing for the opposition is that he is only 27 years – old and continues to improve.
