Matty Longstaff impressed in pre-season.
The 19 year old appearing in all five friendlies this summer.
That culminating in a spectacular winning goal against St Etienne at St James Park.
This season has seen Matty Longstaff training with the first team and an injury to brother Sean, opened up a place on the first team bench at Liverpool for the first time.
Injuries opened up the way for Sean Longstaff and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, could the same be set to happen for his younger brother?
On Monday night 373 were there to watch Newcastle United’s reserves take on Norwich.
Steve Bruce was conspicuous by his presence at the game, whilst Matty Longstaff was conspicuous by his absence on the pitch and indeed the whole matchday squad.
It suggests that Sean Longstaff’s injury won’t be instantly sorted, meaning a place on the bench for Matty Longstaff beckons again and then who knows…
That is the problem with young players, so often it takes injuries before they can ever get a chance.
As for last night’s game, the few hundred gathered at a chilly Whitley Park were treated to an excellent game.
Rosaire Longelo and Luke Charman with quality strikes putting Newcastle two up with goals in a five minute spell late in the first half.
However, the Canaries quickly hit back and in the final seconds of the opening half, pulled it back to 2-1.
Newcastle looked set to extend their lead again but after failing to take their chances, a sucker punch on 65 minutes saw the visitors equalise.
However, rather than crumble, Newcastle’s youngsters found a winner.
After failing to make the first team squad or get a move, Jamie Sterry has shown good character to turn out regularly for the reserves and his cross was met by Tom Allan for the winner.
Steve Bruce should have been pleasantly surprised by the quality, especially going forward.
Hopefully fans will see a similarly entertaining win on Saturday for the crunch first team clash against Brighton.
