Newcastle United misfit Achraf Lazaar has begged the club for one more chance next season, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the left back is heading back to the Magpies with an open mind and at full fitness, having suffered through injury problems while on loan at Sheffield Wednesday this term.

The 27-year-old is hoping to get a chance to at least show what he can do in pre season this summer, regardless of who the manager is at St James’ Park.

The Moroccan international has made just 10 appearances in all competitions since joining the club from Palermo in 2016 [Source: Transfermarkt].

OPINION

Lazaar may well be returning to Tyneside with an open mind, but if Rafael Benitez remains the manager then it’s surely highly unlikely that he will be given much of a chance this summer. It’s strange to think that the Spaniard was the one who actually brought Lazaar to the club, be he soured on the Morrocan pretty quickly, that’s for sure. The Magpies aren’t overly blessed at left back these days, with winger Matt Ritchie filling in at wing back for much of the season, while Paul Dummett and Ciaran Clark can also play there if needed. However, none of them are what you could call top quality Premier League starters. Lazaar probably isn’t either, in all honesty, but it may be worth giving him a chance in pre season before deciding on his future. It’s unlikely, but he could just have what it takes to make an impact for Benitez’s team. He did well for Wednesday when he played this term, so it’s not impossible that he could do the same at St James’.
