Newcastle United are interested in a move for Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann after the Eagles quoted them an asking price of £6m for the experienced defender.

According to The Sun, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wants to bring Dann to St James’ Park after Palace put the tempting fee on the head of the 32-year-old centre-half.

The former Coventry, Birmingham and Blackburn defender signed for the Eagles in January 2014 and has gone onto make 133 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 12 goals. Dann captained the club during the 2016/17 season.

Dann won the club’s Player of the Year award for 2014/15, followed by the Player’s Player of the Year award for 2015/16.

The Liverpool-born defender also has two England U21 caps but failed to make the step up the the senior team.

However, a cruciate ligament injury in December 2017 left Dann sidelined for over a year, only making his comeback in a FA Cup game against Grimsby in January 2019. He only went onto make 10 apperances last season thanks to the superb form of James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho.

With 437 career appearances, Newcastle would be singing an extremely experienced centre back on the cheap with plenty of Premier League experienced. The Magpies require cover at the back after Florian Lejeune’s serious knee injury.

Newcastle, currently in the middle of a takeover saga, may have doubts over bringing Dann to Tyneside after his recent injuries.

However, should the takeover go through and Benitez should remain as manager, he may be given more authority over transfers.
